For many years a popular large-size transport that fits into the niche between SUV and van, the Chevrolet Suburban offers an excellent combination of interior space, functional controls, and the latest in high-tech convenience features. As the years have gone by and tastes have changed, so has the Suburban. The 2018 model represents the positive results after a need for upgrading, and those who drove a Suburban a decade ago but aren't familiar with the current version will be extremely pleased with the changes.

The GMC Yukon has also evolved with the changing attitudes about what's important and what isn't. However, many will find that the large interior of this model isn't as passenger-friendly as what is experienced inside the Suburban, and the standard features list comes up a bit short as well. For those who want all the necessities included, leaving them with the choice of package options to fill out the checklist, the Suburban comes out a bit ahead of the Yukon.

Interior Design

This is no luxury vehicle, but it's also not just a squared-off utility transport, either. The 2018 Chevrolet Suburban has been redesigned on the inside, and the focus is on ergonomics. The second row of seats now boasts more legroom than ever before, and heated second-row seating is now available. The power-folding feature of the second-row seats is easy to operate. The control panel has also been reorganized, and now all the buttons and dials are within easy reach. The long length of the rear doors means easy access to the second- and third-row seating area. Outward visibility is excellent. The 2018 GMC Yukon has a spacious interior and can seat up to nine, but the high floor in the rear is a real problem. There's also very little storage space behind the rear seats.

Standard Features

Every 2018 Chevrolet Suburban comes with seating for eight, tri-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and the Chevy MyLink infotainment system. The latter includes an 8-inch screen display, a rearview camera, smartphone app integration, satellite radio, and five USB ports. OnStar is also included, and the teen driver system that sets limits for younger drivers is also standard. The LT trim adds on leather upholstery, heated front bucket seats, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system. The 2018 GMC Yukon also seats eight, and the available bench seat increases the total to nine, but if second-row bucket seats are chosen, the capacity is reduced to seven individuals. The standard features list is pretty impressive, but many of the safety systems cannot be added onto the base trim and are available only if the more expensive SLT trim is chosen.

Package Options

The base trim on the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban can be purchased with the Enhanced Driver Alert package that adds on all of the available safety features that don't come as standard equipment. There's also a special Luxury package available for the LT trim that includes a power-operated tailgate, heated second-row seats, and power-folding second- and third-row seats. The 2018 GMC Yukon is eligible only for the aforementioned Enhanced Driver Alert package, and most of the standard features on the top-level Denali trim can only be added to the lower trims as pricey stand-alone options.
