The 2018 Chevy Malibu is a classic choice for those who want the smooth, stylish experience of a midsize sedan. This great all-around car is safe, stylish, practical, and even fun to drive, with plenty of room for passengers to ride comfortably. U.S. News and World Report even named it as the best new car for teens. For 2018, the Chevy Malibu is available in four separate trim levels. Here's how the two mid-range models, the LS and LT, compare with one another.

Outstanding Fuel Economy

The 2018 Chevy Malibu has one of the highest EPA fuel economy ratings in the class: 27/36 city highway miles per gallon with the base powertrain, a 160-horsepower turbo-four with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine is included in both the LS and LT trims as well as the base L model. Drivers who want more power will have to upgrade to the top-of-the-line Premier trim, which is equipped with a 250-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. This combo offers 22 city/32 highway mpg.

High-Tech Features

Most Malibu drivers will want to at least upgrade from the L to the LS, which is the lowest trim to offer Chevy's MyLink infotainment system. This includes a seven-inch touchscreen with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality as well as Bluetooth, USB, and even a Wi-Fi hotspot. Move up one level to the LT to add satellite radio, heated side mirrors, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Options packages are also available for the LT, including the Convenience and Technology bundle for wireless smartphone charging and a larger touchscreen.

High crash test ratings and unique safety features make both trims of the 2018 Chevy Malibu a winner in this category. Both the LS and LT come standard with a rearview camera and the Teen Driver system, which allows parents to set speed and volume limits for specific drivers. LT drivers can also add Chevy's suite of advanced driver assistance features, the Driver Confidence package, which entails forward collision warning, front pedestrian braking and front automatic braking, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, following distance indicator, and rear cross traffic alert. The 2018 Chevy Malibu has a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration. While the new model year hasn't yet been evaluated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the near-identical 2017 model was designated by the agency as a Top Safety Pick when equipped with the driver assistance features available on the LT.
