Mid-size pickup trucks often get overlooked by the buying public because they seem to be a bit small for the heavy-duty work and often don't come with very powerful engines. It's also considered normal for them to be regarded as passenger haulers rather than cargo haulers. However, this is still an important truck class because a huge number of buyers are indeed looking for something that isn't too big and ponderous. The Chevy Colorado is a great example.

When compared to other members of this truck class, the 2018 Chevy Colorado is often pitted against the Toyota Tacoma. The latter has a very successful history of its own, and it's no-frills design and construction makes it popular with a certain segment of the buying public. However, the Colorado may offer more for the price paid. Buyers can enjoy a bit of luxury and still get a remarkable work truck.

Interior Design

The 2018 Chevy Colorado is available either as an extended cab or crew cab truck. The front seating area is expansive, and all of the buttons and knobs are within easy reach. Admittedly, the rear seating area on the crew cab is a bit cramped, but the optional side-steps make for easier entry and exit. Vinyl upholstery and bucket-style front seats are standard on the base trim and Work Truck versions, and the uplevel trims feature heated front seats, automatic climate control, and simulated leather upholstery. One of the main differences between the Work Truck and the base model is the seat design. The Work Truck comes with fold-up rear jump seats on the crew cab configuration, cloth upholstery, and floor carpeting. The 2018 Toyota Tacoma can also be purchased as an extended cab or crew cab model, but regardless of the choice, buyers will find that the front seating area is less spacious than what is experienced inside the Colorado.

High-Tech Features

The 2018 Chevy Colorado isn't the most powerful mid-size pickup on the road, but it also isn't a stripped-down model. Even the base trim comes with the app-based MyLink system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and voice controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included. A rearview camera is standard on all trims, and the base truck comes with a very nice six-speaker audio system. The 7-inch display screen offers crisp imagery and is very easy to navigate. OnStar is optional on the Work Truck and is standard on the uplevel versions, and it includes navigation and crash notification. The LT and Z71 trims come with a Bose audio system, an 8-inch screen, and satellite radio. These trims also have a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The 2018 Toyota Tacoma base trim comes with the Safety Sense-P systems that ensure safety and security while operating the truck, but most of the high-tech convenience features are unavailable unless you upgrade to the higher trim levels.

Premium Options

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma is a well-rounded pickup truck, but one of its major faults is the lack of premium options. The TRD Pro version was retired for a year and then brought back into the fold for 2018. This sounds nice, but even this trim comes with a smaller screen display than the uplevel Colorado models, and one pays a hefty price in order to enjoy the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2018 Colorado offers more high-tech options per trim level.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado combines the best mix of performance, horsepower, interior features, and safety systems in a truly affordable mid-size pickup. If you haven't given the 2018 Colorado a test drive, come on down to our dealership to see how it compares to the Toyota Tacoma.
