Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, the Sonic is Chevrolet’s replacement for the outgoing Aveo subcompact. Coming on the highly successful heels of the Cruze, the Sonic shares the same engines – the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder and the 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder – and one of the transmissions. Notable standard features include alloy wheels, electric power steering, StabiliTrak electronic stability control and 10 airbags. Several technological options, including Bluetooth functionality and OnStar with six months of turn-by-turn navigations are available. Offered in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback models and LS, LT and LZ trim levels, the Sonic goes on sale this fall.

Powering the 2012 Sonic are two of Chevy’s Ecotec engines, the 1.8-liter, 138-horsepower four-cylinder, and the 1.4-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder, which also produces 138 horsepower but creates 148 lb.-ft. of torque vs. the 1.8’s 125 lb.-ft. The normally aspirated 1.8-liter engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.4-liter turbo is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 1.8-liter engine comes in at 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with the manual gearbox and 25 city/35 highway with the automatic. With the 1.4-liter turbo power plant, the Sonic returns 29 city/40 highway.

Sonic’s standard safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, emergency braking assist, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, high-strength steel safety cage, 10 airbags, seat belt load limiters and pre-tensioners and tire-pressure monitoring. Brake-force distribution uses sensors to divide braking pressure front to back according to vehicle loading. Brake assist senses a panic stop and if insufficient pressure to engage the antilock system is detected, the system applies maximum braking force. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the Sonic a 2012 Top Safety Pick. Sonic’s suspension system consists of MacPherson struts, coil springs and anti-sway bar up front, while a semi-independent torsion beam, compound links and gas-charged shock absorbers are in back. Electronic power steering featuring a war compensator is standard, while a range of wheel sizes is offered, including 17-inch alloys with sport tires.

An AM/FM audio system with four speakers, equalizer and auxiliary input jack is standard on LS models, while a six-speaker system with CD player, MP3 playback, equalizer and auxiliary input is optional on the LS and standard on LT. The LZ’s standard audio system includes a USB port, MP3/WMA playback, digital signal processor, auxiliary input and Bluetooth streaming audio. The system is an option on LT models. Sirius XM Satellite Radio with a three-month trial subscription is optional on LS and standard on LT and LZ. Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity is available on LT, standard on LZ. OnStar with six months of Directions and Connections is standard on all models and includes Automatic Crash Response, Emergency services, Crisis Assist, Stolen Vehicle Assistance and Slowdown, Remote Door Unlock, Vehicle Diagnostics, Roadside Assistance and Hands Free Calling. Heated front seats, steering wheel audio and phone controls and power sunroof are available options.
